Talwin Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Talwin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Consuming alcohol while using Talwin could potentially increase your risk for serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Do not drink alcohol while using this medication.
The manufacturer of alvimopan recommends it not be used in people who have been taking opioid medications such as Talwin for seven or more consecutive days right before alvimopan is to be started. This is because opioids can increase the risk for alvimopan side effects. Alvimopan is a medication used in people who have just had bowel surgery.
Azelastine Nasal Spray
Combining azelastine with narcotic pain medications such as Talwin may increase your risk for drowsiness and decrease your alertness. Talk with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
Dopamine Agonists
If you take your dopamine agonist with an opioid medication, such as Talwin, you may experience more sedation than usual. Let your healthcare provider know if you become extremely drowsy while taking these medications.
Droperidol is a medication used to reduce nausea and vomiting that may occur during surgery. Combining it with Talwin may increase the risk for extreme sedation, confusion, and breathing problems. Your healthcare provider may choose to give you a lower dose of droperidol or Talwin to help reduce the risk of this interaction.
Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Talwin can cause significant drowsiness. Taking it with other medications that cause drowsiness may lead to serious side effects, such as extreme sedation, confusion, and serious breathing problems. Check with your healthcare provider before combining such drugs.
Combining metyrosine with Talwin could cause extreme sedation. You should avoid any activities that require mental alertness, such as driving a car or operating heavy machinery, if you experience drowsiness while taking these medicines.
Other Opioids
Talwin can make other opioids less effective. It may also cause withdrawal symptoms in people who have been taking other opioids on a regular basis. If you take other opioids, your healthcare provider may choose to slowly take you off these other medications before starting Talwin.
Opioid medications, such as Talwin, can make pegvisomant less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your pegvisomant dosage if you use these medicines together.
Thiazide Diuretics
If you combine Talwin with a thiazide diuretic, your blood pressure may become too low. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely for this problem. Let him or her know if you experience dizziness or faintness, especially when standing, as this could be a sign of low blood pressure.
