Drugs Home > Generic Nature-Throid

Although generic versions of Nature-Throid used to be available, they have all been discontinued. Several generic medications contain the same active ingredients as Nature-Throid (thyroid USP), but they are not actually considered generic Nature-Throid products. Since Nature-Throid and other thyroid USP medicines have not been approved by the FDA, it is difficult to determine if these products are equivalent.

Generic Nature-Throid: An Overview

Nature-Throid™ (thyroid USP) is a prescription thyroid medication made from the thyroid glands of pigs, which makes it a "natural" thyroid product. It is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), as well as a few other thyroid problems.

Nature-Throid is manufactured by RLC Labs. Although generic versions were once available, they have all been discontinued.

Nature-Throid Shortage

Many people have been frustrated to find that this medication (as well as other similar products) has been very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain lately. Apparently, there has been a sudden increase in demand for Nature-Throid, and the company has had difficulty keeping up with this increase.

The manufacturer does not know when this medication will again become consistently available. It is possible that a few strengths may become intermittently available initially, before all strengths return to the market. Until then, discuss your other treatment options with your healthcare provider.

**October 2010 Update** After an extended shortage, all strengths of Nature-Throid are once again available.
