It's important to take your dosage of gabapentin enacarbil exactly as prescribed. This product comes as an extended-release tablet that is usually taken once or twice a day. If you are switching to this medication from Neurontin or Gralise, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose.
The dosage for gabapentin enacarbil (Horizant™) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on the condition being treated and how well your kidneys are functioning. As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
The standard dosing for restless legs syndrome (RLS) treatment is 600 mg once daily, with food, at approximately 5 p.m. Higher doses have been shown to increase the risk of side effects without providing any additional benefit.
For people taking the recommended dose (600 mg once daily), this medication can be stopped abruptly if necessary. For people taking more than the recommended dose, gabapentin enacarbil should be stopped gradually.
People with kidney disease may need to be on a lower dosage, such as 300 mg once a day or every other day, depending on how poorly their kidneys are functioning.
The standard dosing for postherpetic neuralgia treatment is 600 mg twice daily, with food. Usually, 600 mg once a day for the first three days is recommended (before going to twice a day) to help minimize side effects.
Higher doses have been shown to increase the risk of side effects without providing any additional benefit.
People with kidney disease may need to be on a lower dosage, such as 600 mg once a day, 300 mg once a day, or even 300 mg every other day, depending on how poorly their kidneys are functioning.
Do not stop taking this medication abruptly, as this increases the risk for seizures. Usually, your healthcare provider will recommend reducing your dosage to once a day for a week before you stop it altogether.
