Temozolomide Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Temozolomide has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using temozolomide were carefully documented. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred and how often they appeared.
In these studies, the most common temozolomide side effects included:
Other common side effects, occurring in 5 percent to 11 percent of people, included but were not limited to:
  • Swelling of the arms, hands, legs, ankles, or feet
  • Problems with coordination or movement
  • Viral infections
  • Problems with memory or memory loss
  • Insomnia
  • Mouth sores or ulcers (see Mouth and Gum Problems During Chemotherapy)
  • Blurred vision
  • Tingling, burning, pricking, or numbing sensations of the skin
  • Drowsiness
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Sore throat
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Coughing
  • Back pain
  • Slight or partial paralysis
  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
  • Increased urination
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI, such as a bladder infection)
  • Speech or communication difficulty
  • Overactive adrenal glands
  • Weakness
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sinus infection
  • Abnormal gait
  • Breast pain in females
  • Joint pain
  • An abnormal or unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Muscle pain
  • Weight gain
  • Confusion
  • An allergic reaction
  • Shortness of breath
  • Red, itchy, or dry skin
  • Vision changes, such as problems with sight, blurred vision, or double vision.
The following side effects were reported in clinical trials of temozolomide injections, in addition to the side effects listed above (however, the exact percentage of people experiencing the side effects were not listed in the temozolomide prescribing information):
  • Bruising
  • Small red or purple spots under the skin
  • Pain, irritation, itching, warmth, swelling or redness at the site of infusion.
