Cancer and Temozolomide

If you have a particular type of brain tumor, you may receive chemotherapy treatment with a drug called temozolomide (Temodar®). This prescription medicine is specifically used to treat:

  • Glioblastoma multiforme
  • Anaplastic astrocytomas after certain other chemotherapy medicines have been unsuccessful.

As a type of alkylating agent, temozolomide works to treat cancer by damaging the DNA, preventing it from replicating. Because the DNA is unable to replicate, temozolomide can prevent cancer cells from growing and multiplying.

This medicine comes as a capsule; it is also available as a powder that is mixed with liquid and given as a slow injection into a vein. Your dosage will depend on your height and weight, the reason you are taking it, and various other factors. It is approved for use in adults only.
