An Introduction to Tacrolimus Side Effects
Just like any medicine,
tacrolimus (
Prograf®,
Protopic®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Tacrolimus
Some tacrolimus side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider.
These include but are not limited to:
- Signs of infection, such as:
- High fever
- Aches and pains
- Coughing
- Chills
- Sores or wounds that appear infected or do not heal
- Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
- Any skin changes, such as discoloration, sores, or lumps
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Urinating less often than usual, or not at all
- Signs of high blood sugar levels, such as:
- Frequent urination
- Increased thirst
- Blurred vision
- Vision changes
- Confusion
- Problems with speech or coordination
- Tremors
- Headaches
- Numbness and tingling sensations of the skin
- Signs of anemia, such as:
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Pale skin
- Swelling in the arms, legs, ankles, or feet
- Increased blood pressure (hypertension)
- An irregular heartbeat
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Seizures
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
- An unexplained rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth or throat
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
