Tacrolimus Ointment Side Effects

In clinical studies, skin reactions at the application site were the most common side effects of tacrolimus ointment. Other reactions included increased skin sensitivity, infections, and rash, among other things. Potentially serious problems that may require prompt medical care include wheezing or difficulty breathing, decreased urine or an inability to urinate, and swollen glands.

An Introduction to Tacrolimus Ointment Side Effects

Just like any medicine, tacrolimus ointment (Protopic®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Tacrolimus Ointment

Some tacrolimus ointment side effects are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider right away. These problems include but are not limited to:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing
  • Signs of infection, such as high fever, aches and pains, coughing, or chills
  • Sores or wounds that look infected or do not heal
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Urinating less often than usual or not at all
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
  • Increased blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Seizures.
