Tacrolimus Ointment for Dermatitis

Available by prescription only, tacrolimus ointment (Protopic®) is used for the short-term treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in people who otherwise have normal immune systems. This medication is considered a "second-line" treatment -- this means it should only be used after other treatments have been tried and failed, or when other treatments are not an option.

When treating atopic dermatitis with tacrolimus ointment, a thin layer is applied to the affected areas twice a day. Wash your hands before and after treatment (unless you are treating your hands). This drug can be given to older adults and children; however, children typically use the lower-strength formula.
