Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Anhydrous Citric Acid Side Effects

Some of the most commonly reported side effects of sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid include headaches, nausea, and vomiting. People using this bowel-prep product are also likely to experience bloating, cramping, and watery diarrhea. However, serious problems may also occur, such as difficulty swallowing, fever, and seizures, which require immediate medical treatment.

Just like any medicine, sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid (Prepopik®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Anhydrous Citric Acid Side Effects

Some side effects of sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Seizures
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Unexplained fever and chills
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Signs of dehydration, such as:
 
    • Thirst
    • Less frequent urination
    • Dry skin
    • Fatigue
    • Lightheadedness
    • Dark-colored urine.
 
Most of the serious sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid side effects are related to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. You are at a higher risk for these problems if you have heart or kidney disease, if you fail to consume enough liquids while using this product, or if you are taking certain other medications (see Drug Interactions With Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Anhydrous Citric Acid).
