Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Anhydrous Citric Acid Dosage

There are two ways to take sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid; however, the dosage is the same for everyone. Your healthcare provider may recommend the split-dose regimen, which calls for taking half the amount the night before your colonoscopy and the other half the next morning, or the day-before regimen, which requires taking both doses the day before the procedure.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Sodium Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Anhydrous Citric Acid

There is only one standard dose of sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid (Prepopik®). However, the dosing instructions your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on whether you follow the split-dose regimen or the day-before regimen.

There are two different recommended regimens for bowel prep with sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid, as follows:

  • The split-dose regimen, which is usually the preferred regimen because it is more effective, consists of:

    • A second dose the next day, approximately five hours before the scheduled colonoscopy, followed by at least three 8-ounce glasses of clear liquid, which must be finished at least two hours before the colonoscopy.

  • The day-before regimen, which might be preferable if a morning colonoscopy is scheduled, consists of:

    • One dose in the afternoon or early evening (between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) the day before the procedure, followed by at least five 8-ounce glasses of clear liquid within the next five hours.

    • A second dose six hours later in the late evening, followed by at least three 8-ounce glasses before going to bed (within five hours).
