What Is Sinecatechins Used For?

Sinecatechins is a type of medicated skin ointment approved to treat external genital and perianal warts. It is thought to work by activating the body's own immune system. Sinecatechins is approved for use in adults only. Healthcare providers may sometimes recommend this medicine for treating other types of warts; however, this would be an off-label use.

An Overview of Uses for Sinecatechins

Sinecatechins (Veregen®) is a prescription skin cream that is used to treat external genital warts and perianal warts in adults age 18 and older with normal immune systems.
Genital warts are a common and bothersome problem. Symptoms include skin-colored growths, much like warts on other parts of the body. They are usually not painful. Male genital warts usually occur on the penis, and female genital warts can occur outside (on the vulva) or inside (on the vagina or cervix). Genital warts can also occur on the scrotum or anus. They are caused by the human papillomavirus virus (HPV).
HPV warts are common and are easily spread through sexual contact. Condoms do not fully protect against HPV, as they often do not cover all the warts. Treatment for genital warts includes several ways to remove the warts, such as with chemical treatments or freezing.
Talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options. Over-the-counter (OTC) wart remover products should never be used for genital warts. There is no sure way to cure genital warts, and warts may disappear and return on their own.
Sinecatechins may help your body get rid of genital or perianal warts. Studies show that more people using sinecatechins had a complete disappearance of their warts, compared to people using a cream with no active ingredients (a placebo). However, warts may still come back, even with treatment. In studies, sinecatechins did not appear to reduce the rate at which warts returned.
