Sinecatechins

Available by prescription only, sinecatechins is a medication used for treating external genital and perianal warts. It comes as an ointment that is applied to the affected area three times daily. This is the first botanical prescription drug approved in the United States, as it is made from green tea leaf extract. Side effects may include skin redness, burning, and pain.

Sinecatechins (Veregen®) is a prescription medication approved to treat external genital warts and perianal warts. It is the first botanical prescription drug approved in the United States. It is "botanical" because it is made from green tea leaf extract.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, sinecatechins may cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common. Although most people who use sinecatechins will experience skin reactions, very severe reactions are less common.
 
In studies, some of the most common side effects of this medication included:
 
  • Redness of the skin
  • Itching
  • Burning
