The medicine, which is available by prescription only, comes in tablet form and several different strengths, including:
- 5 mg tablets
- 10 mg tablets
- 20 mg tablets
- 40 mg tablets
- 80 mg tablets.
The recommended starting dosage for most people with high
cholesterol is 20 mg to 40 mg of simvastatin once a day, taken at night. For children, the usually starting dose is 10 mg once daily.
If your (or your child's) cholesterol goals are not reached after several weeks, your healthcare provider can increase the dosage as needed. The average daily dosage for adults is 5 mg to 80 mg daily, and the maximum daily simvastatin dose for children is 40 mg.
