Side Effects of the Rivastigmine Patch

Difficulty passing urine, severe weight loss, and anxiety are some of the potentially serious side effects of the rivastigmine patch. These side effects occur infrequently, but could be dangerous and should be reported to a healthcare provider right away. Some of the more common rivastigmine patch side effects, which are generally minor, include nausea, decreased appetite, weakness, and insomnia.

Side Effects of the Rivastigmine Patch: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with the rivastigmine patch (Exelon® Patch); however, not everyone who uses the medication will experience side effects. In fact, many people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, they are often minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of the Rivastigmine Patch

Some side effects with the rivastigmine patch, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • A dangerously slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Stomach ulcers or intestinal ulcers
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Seizures
  • Worsening of asthma
  • A worsening of Parkinson's disease symptoms (in people using the patch for Parkinson's dementia)
  • Uncontrollable body movements or twitches
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as an unexplained rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth or throat, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
