How Does Risedronate and Calcium Work?

Risedronate belongs to a group of medications known as bisphosphonates. The drug binds to certain cells in bones and slows down the rate at which they break down. Calcium is a mineral that is important for healthy bones and is necessary in order for risedronate to be effective.
 

Is Risedronate and Calcium Used in Children?

Risedronate and calcium is not approved for use in children. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using the drug in children. Risedronate and calcium has been studied in children as a treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta, but has not been shown to be effective for this use.
 

Is Risedronate and Calcium Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend risedronate and calcium for something other than the condition listed in this article. The following are considered off-label risedronate and calcium uses:
 
  • Treating or preventing osteoporosis due to the use of steroids (such as prednisone)
  • Treating osteoporosis in men
  • Treating Paget's disease of the bone.
