You should not take this medicine if you:
- Are allergic to it, or to any of the inactive components used to make it. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
- Are breastfeeding a child, although some sources consider PTU to be compatible with breastfeeding (see Propylthiouracil and Breastfeeding).
There are a number of situations in which PTU should not be taken, along with several safety concerns people should be aware of before beginning treatment. However, it is possible that not all of these issues were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider about the specific precautions and warnings with PTU that may apply to you.
