You should not take this medicine if you:
- Are allergic to it, or to any of the inactive components used to make it. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
- Are breastfeeding a child, although some sources consider PTU to be compatible with breastfeeding (see Propylthiouracil and Breastfeeding).
There are a number of situations in which PTU should not be taken, along with several safety concerns people should be aware of before beginning treatment.
