Drug Interactions With Previfem

A number of medications can cause drug interactions with Previfem, including many seizure medications, theophylline, protease inhibitors, and barbiturates. Any negative interactions could increase your risk of pregnancy or other side effects. If you are unsure about what to do about a Previfem drug interaction, use a backup method of birth control until you can speak with your healthcare provider.

An Introduction to Previfem Drug Interactions

This particular medication has been discontinued by its manufacturer.
Previfem® was a generic version of Ortho-Cyclen®, and other generic versions are still available (sold under the names MonoNessa® and Sprintec®). This medication was likely discontinued because its manufacturer (Teva Pharmaceuticals USA) "bought out" the maker of Sprintec (Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc.), and it did not make sense for Teva to be making two different generic versions of Ortho-Cyclen.

Previfem (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription oral contraceptive that is a generic version of Ortho-Cyclen®. It can potentially interact with several other medicines. Most women have heard stories about accidental pregnancies occurring due to interactions between birth control pills and antibiotics, but antibiotics are not the only medications that interact with birth control pills. If you are ever unsure about what to do about a Previfem drug interaction, be sure to use backup birth control until you can speak with your healthcare provider. Some of the medicines that may lead to Previfem interactions include:

    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)
