What Is Prednicarbate Used For?

Both ointment and emollient cream forms of prednicarbate are prescribed to treat a wide variety of inflammatory skin conditions, such as seborrhea and allergic dermatitis. Sometimes, this medicine is used in an "off-label" fashion to treat labial or penile adhesions. Prednicarbate should be used for a short period to minimize the risk of side effects; this is especially important for children.

An Overview of Uses for Prednicarbate

Prednicarbate (Dermatop®) is a prescription skin medication used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions. Such conditions include but are not limited to:

Prednicarbate is approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids. This is a very broad indication. Prednicarbate comes in two forms: a cream and an ointment. The ointment is greasier, but is more moisturizing and stronger, compared to the cream.

How Does Prednicarbate Work?

Prednicarbate is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are a type of corticosteroid, or "steroid" for short. Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Prednicarbate works for most conditions by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.

Can Children Use Prednicarbate?

Prednicarbate cream is approved for children as young as one year of age. The ointment, which is more potent, is approved for use in children as young as 10 years of age. Children are at an increased risk for serious side effects of steroids. In general, steroids, including this one, are used for short-term treatment only. This is especially important for children.

Keep in mind that prednicarbate is not approved to treat diaper rash and should never be applied to the diaper area, due to the increased risk of side effects, unless your child's healthcare provider specifically recommends that you do so.
