Prednicarbate Side Effects

Reported Side Effects of Prednicarbate

Prednicarbate has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In some of these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using the drug were documented and compared to those that occurred in a similar group of people given a placebo (a cream or ointment with no active ingredient). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the groups using the placebo.

Not all prednicarbate studies used a placebo (this is especially true for the studies in children).

In the studies, common side effects of prednicarbate included:

  • Shiny skin -- in up to 3 percent of people
  • Spider veins -- up to 5 percent
  • Thinning of the skin -- up to 3 percent.

Other, less commonly reported side effects included:

  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Hives
  • Allergic reactions
  • Rash
  • Drying and scaling
  • Cracked skin
  • Pain.

Adverse reactions are more likely to occur if you cover prednicarbate with a bandage, as this increases the absorption of the medication. Do not cover the medication unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Long-Term Prednicarbate Side Effects

Using steroids like prednicarbate for a long time can cause a different set of side effects. These reactions are most likely to be seen in people who use prednicarbate over a large area of the body for a long time, and might include:

  • Weight gain
  • Bulging eyes
  • Fluid retention
  • Osteoporosis
  • Loss of muscle
  • Fat deposits on the face and back, causing a round face and a fatty hump on the back of the neck
  • Diabetes
  • Cataracts
  • Stunted growth (in children).

Keep in mind that such problems are much more common with systemic steroids and are probably quite rare with prednicarbate.
