Pravastatin (Pravachol®) is a prescription medicine used for lowering high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It comes in tablet form and is available as a generic or brand-name drug. By blocking an enzyme that controls the rate of cholesterol production in the body, pravastatin can decrease LDL ("bad cholesterol"), increase HDL ("good cholesterol"), and reduce triglyceride levels. These actions can also help prevent heart disease and other heart-related problems. Potential side effects of the medication include nausea, diarrhea, and headache.
