Dosing With Pravastatin (Cont.)

Dosing With Pravastatin for Children

The recommended starting dosage of pravastatin for children (ages 8 to 13) with high cholesterol is Pravastatin tablets 20 mg once a day. For children ages 14 to 18, the recommended starting dosage is Pravastatin tablets 40 mg once a day.

If your child does not reach their cholesterol goal on the starting pravastatin dosage, your healthcare provider may choose to increase the dose. The pravastatin dosage can also be decreased if side effects occur.

General Information on Dosing With Pravastatin

Some considerations for people taking pravastatin include:

  • Your pravastatin medication can be taken at any time during the day.

  • To maintain even levels of pravastatin in your body, make sure it is taken at the same time each day.

  • Pravastatin can be taken with or without food.

  • Swallow your pravastatin with a drink of water. Do not break, chew, or crush the pravastatin.

  • For pravastatin to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Pravastatin will not work if you stop taking it.

  • If you are taking a bile acid sequestrant, make sure to take your pravastatin more than one hour before the bile acid sequestrant or more than four hours after. Bile acid sequestrants include:
o Cholestyramine (Prevalite®, Questran®, Questran Light®, LoCholest®)
  • Remember that lowering cholesterol begins with lifestyle changes (weight loss, low-cholesterol diet, and exercise). If lifestyle changes do not lower cholesterol to a desirable level, cholesterol medication, such as pravastatin, may be necessary. However, even people who are taking cholesterol medication should make appropriate lifestyle changes.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to pravastatin or your pravastatin dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking pravastatin without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
