Pomalidomide Dosage

With pomalidomide, the dosage will be calculated based on a number of factors, such as how well you tolerate the drug and whether you develop serious reactions. This cancer treatment comes as capsules that are taken once a day for 21 days. This will be followed by a 7-day break in treatment. This cycle will continue until the cancer progresses or serious side effects occur.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Pomalidomide

The dosage of pomalidomide (Pomalyst®) your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on how well you tolerate the medicine and whether you develop potentially serious pomalidomide side effects.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Recommended Pomalidomide Dosing Guidelines

The usual recommended initial dose of pomalidomide for treating multiple myeloma is 4 mg once daily for 21 days, followed by 7-day break when the medication is not taken. This 28-day cycle is usually repeated until the cancer progresses.

Your healthcare provider may recommend a temporary break in treatment if you experience certain potentially serious pomalidomide side effects, such as dangerously low blood cells. The medication is usually restarted at a lower dose once the side effect improves. If you continue to experience serious side effects at the dose of 1 mg a day, you may need to stop taking the medication altogether.

Some people will take pomalidomide with another medication known as dexamethasone (Decadron®, Dexpak®, Maxidex®). If your healthcare provider recommends this combination treatment, make sure you understand the dosing instructions for dexamethasone as well.

General Information on Taking Pomalidomide

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with pomalidomide include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of a capsule. It is usually taken by mouth once a day.

  • Pomalidomide should be taken without food, at least two hours before or two hours after a meal. You can use water to swallow the capsules.

  • Do not open, break, or chew pomalidomide capsules; they must be swallowed whole.

  • Take your dose at the same time each day to keep an even level of the drug in your bloodstream.

  • Try not to handle the capsules any more than is necessary. If any of the medicine in the capsules gets on your hands or body, wash the area immediately with soap and water.

  • Because pomalidomide can cause birth defects, women of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Do not stop taking it without first talking to your healthcare provider.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
