What Is the Generic Name for Pimozide?

Although pimozide is sometimes called the "generic name" for Orap® (pimozide), it is simply the active ingredient in the drug and not a generic version of it. The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

Although all of the patents for pimozide have expired, no generic version of the drug has been made. It is not entirely clear why this is the case. It could be that the demand for the medication is too small for it to be profitable to make a generic product.
