Pimozide

Pimozide is used to treat motor and verbal tics in people who have not adequately responded to, or cannot take, other medications to treat Tourette syndrome. It comes as a tablet that is taken one or more times a day. This prescription medicine may not be suitable for people with certain allergies or medical conditions. Side effects include sleepiness, headaches, and weakness.

What Is Pimozide?

Pimozide (Orap®) is a prescription medication approved to control motor and verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome. Pimozide is not considered a first-line treatment for Tourette syndrome. Instead, it is reserved for people who have not tolerated or responded to other treatment, and who have severe tics that interfere with their development or daily lives.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, pimozide may cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
 
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
 
Common side effects seen with pimozide include but are not limited to:
 
  • Sleepiness
  • Weakness and lack of energy
  • Headache
  • Restlessness
  • Increased saliva production.
