Pimozide for Delusions

Pimozide (Orap®) is a prescription antipsychotic medication. It is approved to treat motor and verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome when other treatment has failed. It is reserved for use in people who have severe tics that interfere with a person's development or daily life.

However, there may be times when a healthcare provider prescribes this medicine for "off-label," or unapproved, uses. One off-label use for pimozide includes treating certain delusions caused by a condition known as delusional parasitosis. This is a rare disorder in which a person has the false belief that they are infested by parasites, such as mites, fleas, lice, or worms.
