Pentazocine/Naloxone Dosage

Pentazocine/naloxone comes in the form of a tablet that is taken every 3 or 4 hours to help treat moderate-to-severe pain in adults and children as young as 12 years old. The pentazocine/naloxone dosage your healthcare provider recommends will depend on the level of your pain, how you respond to the medicine, and various other factors. The medicine can be taken with or without food.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Pentazocine/Naloxone

The dose of pentazocine/naloxone (Talwin® Nx) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your level of pain
  • How you respond to the medication
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Recommended Pentazocine/Naloxone Dosing Guidelines

The usual recommended initial dosage for treating moderate-to-severe pain is one tablet (50 mg/0.5 mg) every three to four hours. Your healthcare provider may recommend an increase to two tablets every three to four hours if one is not enough to adequately control your pain. Normally, pentazocine/naloxone begins to relieve pain 15 to 30 minutes after it is taken and continues to work for 3 or more hours.
If you take this medication regularly for a long period of time, you may become tolerant to its pain-relieving effects. Let your healthcare provider know if pentazocine/naloxone stops working well to control your pain. He or she may need to adjust your dose or prescribe a different medication.
You could develop withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop taking this medicine, especially if you have been using it on a regular basis. Your healthcare provider may need to gradually reduce your dose if you will no longer be taking pentazocine/naloxone.
