Peginterferon Alfa-2b

Storage Information

Store peginterferon alfa-2b pens under refrigeration, but be careful not to let them freeze. The vials should be kept at room temperature. Both the vials and the pens are for single use only, as they do not contain any preservatives. If your dose is less than the full vial or pen, the remaining unused amount must be discarded; it cannot be saved for later.
Once mixed up, a dose of peginterferon alfa-2b should be used immediately or stored in the refrigerator and used within 24 hours.

Is There a Generic Version?

This medicine is not available in generic form (see Generic PegIntron or Generic Sylatron).

Who Makes Peginterferon Alfa-2b?

Peginterferon alfa-2b is made by Schering Corporation, a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.

Available Strengths

PegIntron, the version used to treat hepatitis C, comes in a kit with everything you need to mix and inject the medication, in the following strengths:
  • 50 mcg per 0.5 mL
  • 80 mcg per 0.5 mL
  • 120 mcg per 0.5 mL
  • 150 mcg per 0.5 mL.
All four strengths come in both vials and pens (injection devices).
Sylatron, the version used to treat malignant melanoma, comes in the following strengths:
  • 296 mcg vial (when prepared, makes a concentration of 40 mcg per 0.1 mL)
  • 444 mcg vial (when prepared, makes a concentration of 60 mcg per 0.1 mL)
  • 888 mcg vial (when prepared, makes a concentration of 120 mcg per 0.1 mL).
