Peginterferon Alfa-2b Dosage

If you are about to undergo treatment with peginterferon alfa-2b, your dosage will be determined based on your age, your kidney function, and the condition being treated, among other factors. The drug comes as an injection that is given just under the skin once a week for up to one year when treating hepatitis C, or for up to five years when treating melanoma.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Peginterferon Alfa-2b

The dose of peginterferon alfa-2b (PegIntron®, Sylatron®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on several factors, such as:

  • The condition being treated (hepatitis C or malignant melanoma)
  • Your age
  • Your weight (and height for children)
  • How well you tolerate the medication
  • How well your kidneys are functioning.

As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Peginterferon Alfa-2b Dosing for Hepatitis C in Adults

PegIntron is the brand of peginterferon alfa-2b used to treat hepatitis C. For adults age 18 and older, the recommended dose of peginterferon alfa-2b for treating hepatitis C genotype 1 infections is 1.5 mcg per kg (about 0.68 mcg per pound) each week for 48 weeks, combined with ribavirin (Rebetol®) capsules taken twice a day. For adults with genotype 1 infections, PegIntron works even better when combined with both ribavirin and a hepatitis C protease inhibitor (like Incivek™ or Victrelis™), although such a combination is not appropriate for all individuals.

The dosage is the same for adults with genotype 2 or 3 infections, except the medications are taken for just 24 weeks. A longer treatment course (48 weeks) may be recommended for people who have already tried and failed other treatments, or various combinations of these treatments.

For adults who cannot take ribavirin, the recommended PegIntron dosage is 1 mcg per kg (about 0.45 mcg per pound) each week for a year.
