Peginterferon Alfa-2b Dosage

Peginterferon Alfa-2b Dosage for Hepatitis C in Children

For children, the healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate dose based on the child's body surface area, which is calculated using both height and weight. PegIntron is only approved for use in children (age 3 to 17) in combination with ribavirin capsules or liquid, which are taken twice a day. The usual length of treatment is 48 weeks (genotype 1) or 24 weeks (genotypes 2 or 3).

Peginterferon Alfa-2b Dosing for Malignant Melanoma

Sylatron is the brand of peginterferon alfa-2b used to treat malignant melanoma. The recommended peginterferon alfa-2b dose for preventing malignant melanoma from returning after surgery is 6 mcg per kg (about 2.7 mcg per pound) each week for the first eight weeks, followed by 3 mcg per kg (about 1.4 mcg per pound) each week thereafter. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dosage if you develop dangerous peginterferon alfa-2b side effects.

Your healthcare provider may recommend taking a nonprescription pain reliever, such as Tylenol® (acetaminophen), 30 minutes before each injection. This can help prevent some of the flu-like symptoms, such as a fever, chills, and muscle aches, that are quite common with peginterferon alfa-2b.

General Information on Using Peginterferon Alfa-2b

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with peginterferon alfa-2b include the following:

  • Peginterferon alfa-2b comes as an injection. It is injected just under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week for up to one year (for hepatitis C) or for up to five years (for melanoma).

  • Inject peginterferon alfa-2b on the same day each week. Pick a day and time that is easy to remember.

  • This medication comes as injection pens or in vials. Either way, each vial or pen is for a single use only. Any unused portion must be discarded; it cannot be saved for later.

  • It is best to inject peginterferon alfa-2b into areas of the skin that have a layer of fat underneath. This includes the thigh, the outer upper arm, or stomach (away from the belly button). Try to rotate the injection sites; do not inject in the same place twice in a row.

  • Make sure your healthcare provider teaches you exactly how to inject peginterferon alfa-2b. This includes:

    • How to prepare the skin
    • How to prepare and mix the injection
    • How to inject the medication
    • What to do with your used needles (this may vary, depending on the local laws and regulations).
If you are not comfortable with any part of the process, please let your healthcare provider know.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or peginterferon alfa-2b dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
