Pantoprazole Drug Interactions

In the case of pantoprazole, drug interactions can occur with medications such as ketoconazole and ampicillin esters. Other potential drug interactions with pantoprazole may involve warfarin. Iron salts also have the potential to interact with pantoprazole.

Pantoprazole Drug Interactions: An Introduction

Pantoprazole sodium ("pantoprazole") -- sold under the brand name Protonix® -- potentially has a number of medicines with which it can interact. Examples of such medications include:

  • Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
  • Iron salts
  • Ampicillin esters (bacampicillin, pivampicillin)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).
  •

Atazanavir

Taking atazanavir with medications like pantoprazole can significantly decrease the level of atazanavir in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. It is not recommended to take these medications together.

Iron Salts
If you are taking pantoprazole and iron salts, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. In such cases, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Ampicillin Esters
If you are taking ampicillin and pantoprazole, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your doctor may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Ketoconazole
If you are taking pantoprazole and ketoconazole, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Warfarin
If you are taking pantoprazole and warfarin, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your doctor may choose to monitor your INR (international normalized ratio) and prothrombin time more frequently and adjust your dosages accordingly.
