Clopidogrel (Plavix)
Some research suggests that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like pantoprazole, may decrease the effectiveness of clopidogrel. This could potentially be a serious drug interaction. However, experts are still in disagreement about how significant this interaction really is and whether it affects all PPIs. Do not combine these medications without discussing the matter with your healthcare provider first.
Digoxin
Pantoprazole may cause low blood magnesium levels, which can lead to serious arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms), especially in people taking digoxin. Your healthcare provider may decide to monitor your magnesium levels periodically if you are taking digoxin and pantoprazole.
Certain Diuretics
Pantoprazole can cause low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia). Because certain diuretics can also cause this problem, combining pantoprazole with one of these diuretics could cause severely low blood magnesium levels, which may lead to serious side effects such as muscle spasms, irregular heart rhythms, or seizures. Your healthcare provider may decide to monitor your magnesium levels periodically if you are taking pantoprazole with one of these diuretics.
Iron Salts
If you are taking pantoprazole and iron salts, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. In such cases, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.
Ampicillin Esters
If you are taking ampicillin and pantoprazole, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your doctor may choose to monitor your progress closely.
