Side Effects of Oxytocin

Although many women seem to tolerate oxytocin (Pitocin®) fairly well, side effects can occur. Because oxytocin is an older medication, there is not a lot of specific information available on how often reactions to this drug occur. However, some of the general side effects that have been reported include:

  • Vomiting
  • Allergic reactions
  • An abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia).

There are also a number of potentially serious problems that can require immediate medical attention. Let your healthcare provider know right away if you are receiving oxytocin and develop problems such as:

  • A sudden, severe headache
  • Vision problems
  • Confusion.

Oxytocin can also cause side effects in the newborn baby. Some of these reactions may include:

  • A low heart rate
  • Brain damage
  • Seizures.
