Side Effects of Oxycodone ER

Severe drowsiness, slow or irregular breathing, and difficulty passing urine are some of the potentially serious side effects of oxycodone ER that require immediate medical attention. However, most side effects of the drug are mild and either do not require treatment or can be treated easily. Some of these more common side effects include constipation, nausea, dry mouth, and dizziness.

An Introduction to Oxycodone ER Side Effects

As with any medicine, oxycodone ER (OxyContin®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, some people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects Seen With Oxycodone ER

Some side effects of this drug are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
 
  • The urge to take more oxycodone ER than prescribed or for a non-medical purpose (see OxyContin Addiction)
  • Falling or unsteadiness
  • Unusual changes in mood or behavior
  • Severe constipation
  • Confusion
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Seizures
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

 

    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
