Side Effects of Oral Tranexamic Acid

Although most women have no problems with oral tranexamic acid, side effects may occur. In clinical trials, the most commonly reported side effect was a headache (this occurred in up to 50.4 percent of women taking the drug). Other common reactions included muscle pain, nasal symptoms (such as congestion), and back pain. Serious problems, though not as common, included vision and speech changes, among others.

Just like any medicine, oral tranexamic acid (Lysteda™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects

Some oral tranexamic acid side effects are potentially serious -- even life-threatening -- and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider.

These include but are not limited to:

Signs of a blood clot in the leg, such as pain in the calf, leg cramps, and leg or foot swelling
Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, or coughing up blood
Sudden loss of vision or vision changes, which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye
Signs of a stroke, such as vision or speech changes, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, and a severe headache
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
- An unexplained rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Swelling of the mouth or throat
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing.
