Oral tranexamic acid is a prescription medication that treats heavy menstrual bleeding by inhibiting the breakdown of blood clots. It is the first nonhormonal drug approved for this use in the United States. Available as a tablet, it is taken three times a day for up to five days during your period. Possible side effects of this medicine include back pain, headache, and nasal symptoms.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, oral tranexamic acid can cause side effects.

However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.

If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.

Common side effects seen with oral tranexamic acid include but are not limited to:

Headache
Sinus or nasal symptoms
Back pain
Muscle pain.
