Omeprazole (
Prilosec®) is a medicine commonly used for treating
gastroesophageal reflux disease (
GERD). It is also approved to treat pathological hypersecretory conditions,
H. pylori infections, and certain types of ulcers.
The drug is available by prescription only and comes in capsule form. Omeprazole capsules are available in three strengths, including 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg. The medicine is typically taken once or twice a day.
Omeprazole caps should not be chewed or crushed, as they contain tiny granules with a special coating that prevents stomach acid from destroying the medication. However, they can be opened and the contents sprinkled onto a spoonful of applesauce (for people who have difficulty swallowing omeprazole caps whole).
You should talk to your healthcare provider before using this proton pump inhibitor if you are pregnant, have liver disease, or have any
allergies.
