Omeprazole (
Prilosec®) is a prescription medication licensed to treat
GERD (
gastroesophageal reflux disease), certain types of ulcers, pathological hypersecretory conditions, and
H. pylori infections. It comes in capsule form and is available in three strengths, including 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg.
A non-prescription version of the medication is also available to treat frequent
heartburn. It only comes in one strength -- omeprazole 20 mg tablets.
The recommended dose of over-the-counter omeprazole for frequent heartburn is 20 mg once daily for up to 14 days every four months. It is not recommended to take this form of omeprazole long-term without talking with your healthcare provider first, in order to rule out more serious conditions.
