Precautions and Warnings With Omeprazole/Sodium Bicarbonate

You may not be able to use omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate if you have an electrolyte imbalance or are required to eat a low-sodium diet. Being aware of these and other omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate precautions and warnings can help ensure a safe treatment process, so make sure your healthcare provider also has a list of all medications you are taking and any medical conditions you have.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking
 omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate (Zegerid®) if you have:
 
  • Restrictions for a low-sodium diet
  • An electrolyte imbalance or acid-base imbalance
  • Had heartburn for more than three months
  • Heartburn with lightheadedness, dizziness, or sweating
  • Chest pain, shoulder pain, or any other heart attack symptoms
  • Frequent wheezing, especially with heartburn
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia) 
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
