Omeprazole/Sodium Bicarbonate

Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate is prescribed to treat various conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. As a proton pump inhibitor, this medicine works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Common side effects include diarrhea and headaches. Prior to using this drug, tell your healthcare provider if you have had heartburn for more than three months, unexplained weight loss, or any allergies.

What Is Omeprazole/Sodium Bicarbonate?

Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate (Zegerid®) is a prescription medication used to treat several conditions related to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
 
A nonprescription version (Zegerid OCT™) is also available for treating heartburn.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate can cause side effects.
 However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
 
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
