Norinyl Drug Interactions
If certain seizure medications, protease inhibitors, or antibiotics are taken with Norinyl, drug interactions could occur. These potentially negative interactions may increase your chance of pregnancy or increase your risk of developing side effects. Because there are several medications that could interfere with the effectiveness of Norinyl, make sure to talk to your healthcare provider before starting any other medication.
An Introduction to Norinyl Drug Interactions
Norinyl® can potentially interact with numerous other medicines. Many of these interactions can increase the risk of unintentional pregnancy and, in some situations, a backup method of birth control may be recommended.Because many medications interact with Norinyl, you should make sure that all of your healthcare providers know that you are taking Norinyl. Any time you start a new medication, check with your healthcare provider about possible interactions with Norinyl. Some of the medicines that may lead to Norinyl interactions include:
- Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
- Some antibiotics
- Aprepitant (Emend®)
- Barbiturate medications, including (but not limited to):
- Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
- Dexamethasone (Decadron®)
- Modafinil (Provigil®)
- Numerous seizure medications, such as:
- Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro™, Tegretol®)
- Felbamate (Felbatol®)
- Lamotrigine (Lamictal®)
- Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin®, Phenytek®)
- Topiramate (Topamax®)
- Protease inhibitors, such as:
- Amprenavir (Agenerase®)
- Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
- Fosamprenavir (Lexiva®)
- Indinavir (Crixivan®)
- Nelfinavir (Viracept®)
- Ritonavir (Norvir®)
- Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Emsam®, Zelapar®)
- Some (but not all) antibiotics
- St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum).
