Norinyl Dosage

Although there are two different types of Norinyl products, there is only one standard way to take the pills. Starting at the beginning of the pack, take one tablet every day, at the same time each day. After you finish one pack, start a new one the next day. It is important to know what to do if you miss your Norinyl dosage, as missing pills significantly increases your risk of pregnancy.

Norinyl Dosage: An Introduction

As always, do not adjust your Norinyl® dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so. Although Norinyl is very effective when taken as directed, not taking Norinyl correctly greatly increases the risk of pregnancy.

Norinyl Strengths and Dosing

Norinyl comes in two different strengths, including:

  • Norinyl 1+35 -- 1 mg of norethindrone and 0.035 mg (35 mcg) of ethinyl estradiol per active tablet (in the first 21 tablets of each pack), followed by 7 inactive tablets (which do not contain any hormones)

  • Norinyl 1+50 -- 1 mg of norethindrone and 0.05 mg (50 mcg) of mestranol per active tablet (in the first 21 tablets of each pack), followed by 7 inactive tablets (which do not contain any hormones).

In addition to the different strengths, the two Norinyl products also have different types of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol versus mestranol).

Basic Norinyl Dosage Instructions

No matter which strength of Norinyl you take, start at the beginning of the pack, taking one tablet daily, at the same time each day. Each pack will last for 28 days (four weeks). After you have finished one pack, immediately start a new one the next day. Do not let any days pass between packs, even if you are still having your period. The first 21 tablets contain the active ingredients. The last seven tablets do not contain any hormones. During this last week, your body gets a little break from the hormones, allowing you to have a period. Sometimes, you may have breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods. When this happens, keep taking Norinyl as usual.
