Nicorette Lozenge Dosage

The recommended starting dosage of the Nicorette Lozenge will vary. For example, if you smoke your first cigarette of the day within 30 minutes of waking up, you will start with a higher strength than someone who waits longer than 30 minutes. The number of lozenges you use each day is slowly decreased, which helps gradually wean your body off nicotine.

An Introduction to Dosing With Nicorette Lozenges

Your initial dose of the Nicorette® Lozenge (nicotine lozenge) will depend on how soon after waking up you normally smoke your first cigarette of the day. The dose is then slowly reduced to gradually wean your body off nicotine.

Following the recommended dosing guidelines for this product will improve your chances of successfully quitting smoking.

Nicorette Lozenge Dosage Guidelines

The Nicorette Lozenge comes in 2-mg and 4-mg strengths. You should use the same strength for your entire 12 weeks of treatment.

People who normally smoke their first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up should use 4-mg Nicorette Lozenges. People who normally smoke their first cigarette more than 30 minutes after waking up should use 2-mg Nicorette Lozenges. The recommended Nicorette Lozenge dosage for both the 2-mg and 4-mg strengths is:

  • One lozenge every one to two hours for the first six weeks (weeks 1 through 6), then
  • One lozenge every two to four hours for three weeks (weeks 7 through 9), then
  • One lozenge every four to eight hours for three weeks (weeks 10 through 12).

Pick a "quit day" and start using Nicorette Lozenges on that day. Try your best not to smoke, but keep trying, even if you slip up.

Using Nicorette Lozenges for the complete 12 weeks of treatment will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. If you continue to have cravings or feel you still need to use Nicorette Lozenges longer than 12 weeks, talk to your healthcare provider.
