Niacin extended-release/simvastatin has been studied in clinical trials, with hundreds of people having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects were documented and compared to problems that occurred in a similar group of people taking just simvastatin (without the extended-release niacin).
 
Based on these studies, the most common niacin extended-release/simvastatin side effects included:
 
  • Flushing -- in up to 59 percent of people
  • Headache -- up to 4.5 percent
  • Itching -- up to 3.2 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 3.2 percent
  • Back pain -- up to 3.2 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 3 percent.
