Naltrexone to Stop Drinking

When used to help people stop drinking, naltrexone (Revia®) is thought to work by preventing the pleasurable effects of alcohol use. By binding to certain opioid receptors, this drug can prevent other substances, including opioid medications, from binding to and activating the receptors. Because naltrexone will not produce those "high" feelings, it can help prevent a relapse in people who are trying to stop using alcohol or opioid medications.
