Generic Naloxone

Naloxone hydrochloride (Narcan®) is a drug prescribed to reverse the effects of opioid narcotic medicines. It is given as an injection into a vein, a muscle, or beneath the skin. This medicine was originally made by Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and sold under the brand name Narcan. However, Endo stopped making the brand-name drug, and it is now only available in generic form, sold under the name naloxone hydrochloride.

These generic products are made by Hospira and International Medication Systems, Limited, and are available in the following strengths:

  • Naloxone 0.4 mg per mL injection
  • Naloxone 1 mg per mL injection.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the generic naloxone products that are currently available are as good as the brand-name Narcan products.
