Precautions and Warnings With Naftifine

Although naftifine may be an effective antifungal medicine for many people, it may not be the best option for some people who have certain allergies or for women who are pregnant or nursing. To make sure this product is right for you, review the warnings and safety precautions associated with naftifine. Also, make sure you know how to properly apply the medicine to avoid potential side effects.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using naftifine (Naftin®) if you:
  • Have any allergies, including to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding.
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Specific Naftifine Precautions and Warnings

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this medicine include the following:
  • Naftifine is for skin use only. Do not swallow it, and be sure to keep it away from the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Don't cover the treated area with a bandage or dressing, unless your healthcare provider suggests you do so. Doing this could increase the risk for side effects.
  • It is unknown if naftifine passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, check with your healthcare provider, or your child's healthcare provider, before using this product (see Naftin and Breastfeeding).
  • Naftifine is a pregnancy Category B medication, which means that it is probably safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown (see Naftin and Pregnancy for more information).
