Naftifine Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects of naftifine include dryness, redness, or other skin irritations. In most cases, reactions tend to be mild and can be treated easily. However, immediate medical treatment may be needed if you experience serious problems, such as intolerable skin reactions, wheezing, or swelling of the mouth or throat.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Naftifine

Just like any medicine, naftifine (Naftin®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with naftifine. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Naftifine Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of naftifine are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Severe, intolerable skin reactions
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Common Side Effects

Naftifine has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In some of these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using naftifine cream or gel were carefully documented and compared to those that were reported in another group using a similar product that did not contain any active ingredients (a placebo). Some studies did not use a placebo.
In these studies, the most common naftifine side effects included:
  • Burning or stinging -- in up to 6 percent of people
  • Dryness -- up to 3 percent
  • Redness -- up to 2 percent
  • Itching -- up to 2 percent
  • Skin irritation -- up to 2 percent.
In general, adverse reactions occurring in the groups treated with naftifine were similar to those that were seen with the placebo.
