Mycophenolate Mofetil Side Effects

Nausea, pain, and insomnia are among the most commonly reported side effects with mycophenolate mofetil. However, clinical trials on this drug have shown that these types of reactions are typically mild and easy to treat. You may need to seek medical attention right away if you develop more serious problems, such as any signs of an infection, problems walking, or difficulty breathing.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Mycophenolate Mofetil

Just like any medicine, mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept®) can cause side effects. As with most immunosuppressant medications, the side effects can be significant. Not everyone who takes the medication will have problems; however, most people will experience side effects during treatment.

Serious Mycophenolate Mofetil Side Effects

Some side effects of mycophenolate mofetil are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider.
 These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Signs of infection, such as:
 
    • Fever
    • Aches and pains
    • Coughing
    • Chills
 
  • Sores or wounds that appear red or do not heal
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Any skin changes, such as:
 
    • Discoloration
    • Sores
    • Changes in the color or size of moles
 
  • Confusion
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Problems speaking or walking
  • Vision changes
  • Coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Problems breathing, shortness of breath, or a new or worse cough
  • Painful urination, urinating less often than usual, or not urinating at all
  • Any signs of high blood glucose (sugar), such as:
 
    • Frequent urination
    • Increased thirst
    • Blurred vision
 
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Unusual tiredness, lack of energy, or dizziness
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain or blood in the stool, which may appear as red or black, tarry stools
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
  • A fast or abnormally beating heart
  • Swelling in the arms, legs, ankles, or feet.
