Some people who have male or female pattern baldness may find minoxidil (Rogaine®) to be an effective medication. It is thought to work by stimulating resting hair follicles to enter into an active growth phase and, therefore, grow hair. Minoxidil comes in the form of a liquid solution and a foam, and is available in two strengths (2% and 5%). It is applied directly on the affected areas of the scalp twice daily, once in the morning and again in the evening. Commonly reported side effects include a dry, flaky, and itchy scalp.
