Minoxidil

What Should I Do If I Forget a Dose?

If you forget to use minoxidil, simply skip your missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use this medication more than twice daily.

How Does It Work?

It is not exactly known how minoxidil works to cause hair growth. It is thought that the medication stimulates resting hair follicles to enter into an active growth phase and, therefore, grow hair. Minoxidil may open the blood vessels around the hair follicles, allowing more blood to flow to the follicles. It may also directly stimulate and enlarge the hair follicles.

When and How to Use This Medication

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with minoxidil include the following:

  • This medication comes as a liquid or foam. It is applied directly on the scalp, usually twice daily (in the morning and evening).

  • The exact instructions for applying this medication may vary by product. Follow the instructions that are included with your particular minoxidil medication.

  • Do not use minoxidil if your scalp is red, irritated, sunburned, or infected.

  • Hair regrowth will not begin immediately upon starting this medication. It may take four months (or longer) to see results.

  • Minoxidil does not permanently reverse hair loss. Hair loss will recur within a few months of stopping the medication.

  • Keep this medication away from your eyes. If you use your hands to apply it, wash them thoroughly right after use.

  • Minoxidil should be applied to a dry scalp. Do not wash your hair for at least four hours after applying the medication. Also, allow the medication to dry completely before using hair-styling products or touching your scalp with clothing or fabric, including hats or pillowcases.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as directed. Using more of the medication will not produce more or faster hair growth, but may increase your risk for side effects.
